Abstract

Seventeen patients (20 knees), who had high tibial osteotomy for varus gonarthrosis between October 1988 and February 1993, were evaluated. There were 13 (76.4 %) women and 4 (23.5 %) men, and the average age at the time of osteotomy was 56.6 years (range 46 to 66 years). Clinical examination results and standing AP/lateral radiographs of the patients were evaluated preoperatively, postoperatively and after an average follow-up period of 5 years. The results of twelve knees (60 %) were graded as excellent or good. High tibial osteotomy was found to be a time-buying procedure, postponing replacement arthroplasty in patients with unicompartmental osteoarthritis.
