Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the treatment of the grade III-IV chondromalasia of the knee joint with abrasion or drilling and to determine the factors affecting the results.
Methods: A retrospective study was performed in 31 patients who had treated by arthroscopic abrasion or drilling of the knee joint between January 1992 – May 1997 in our department. Results was evaluated according to the Lysholm scale. There were 17 females and 14 males whose ages ranged from 19 to 70 years (mean 46.6 years).
Results: The average follow-up period was 38.8 months (ranged from 7 to 74 months). There were 7 cases who had only isolated chondral lesion and 24 cases who had an additional pathology within joint. Excellent and good results were obtained in 21 (67.7 %) of the patients according to Lysholm scale. The result in 10 cases (32.3%) were fair and poor.
Conclusion: It was determined that in the patients whose results were excellent or good, the period of the symptoms was short-term and the region of chondral lesion was small and limited.
