Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the results of patients with patellar fractures treated surgically.
Patients and methods: 31 patellar fractures of 29 patients treated surg, cally in our clinic between 1983 and 1993 were evaluated. Of those 8 were females and 21 were males. The mean age was 33.75 ranging from 13 to 67. The average duration of follow-up was 6 years (3.5 to 13.5 years). In 17 of the cases partial patellectomy, in 10 of the cases modified tension band, in one of the cases circumferential wire loop fixation, in one of the cases lag screw and in 2 of the cases total patellectomy were performed.
Results: Results were rated as good in 9 cases, moderate in 13 cases and poor in 9 cases.
Conclusion: It was concluded that modified tension band method should be the first choice in the treatment of patellar fractures and additional trauma is a poor prognostic factor in the fractures.
