Abstract

Introduction: We reviewed 16 primary total hip arthroplasties in 14 patients to whom expansion cup acetabular component had been used. The operations were performed in between January 1991- July 1996. Patients: There were 10 women and 4 men with a mean age at operation of 56 years (Range 42-67y.) The mean follow up was 29.5 months.(Range 18-60 m.).
Method: Clinically Harris hip score and pain score were evaluated. The preoperative, postoperative and most recent radiographs were evaluated and evidence of migration assessed. Acetabular cup inclination, Wiberg angle, vertical and horizontal migration of the cup according to tear drop, poliethylene wear restoration of the center of rotation of the hip comparing with the normal side and radiolucencies around the acetabular cup were evaluated
Results: The average preoperative Harris score was 41.8 (Range 27-53), and at the latest follow up was 90.18 (Range 77-97). The average pain score was 15.6 (Range10-20) and at the latest follow up was 41 (Range 30-44). Intraoperatively the acetabular cups had been placed more superior in the pelvis comparing with the normal anatomic place of the hip joint. There was no luxation, no evidence of loosening, and no revision.
Discussion: Although the follow up period is rather short the results using these acetabular components were encouraging
